Think Aloud Demonstration
Reading
Today what I'd like to do is talk to you about a think aloud. A think a loud strategy that I'm going to work with you today on, trying to model for you, some thinking that I do as I read. And the purpose of it is try and give you an idea of the thoughts that go through my mind to help me comprehend better what it is that I'm reading. Read today to you a short passage from the reading called strike song, and it's taken from the greatest stories never told. That's one of my favorite little books. It's got a lot of neat history, history, trivia in it, and some fun things that are short readings that give you some pretty good background information. Now what I'm going to do is today, I'm going to use some questions and strategies that go through my mind when I read something to help me comprehend it better. And what I'm going to talk to you about is how you can use when you're reading questions or textbook section headings or pictures and captions to get an idea of what it is you're going to read before you actually read the material. It kind of gets into your head, some things to get started on comprehending. All right. And what I'm going to ask you today, first of all, is as you look at that story, I heard this question earlier, somebody said, well, what strikes on? All right, why do you think I picked this reading today? Can anybody tell me that? What does it look like the reading is about? Yeah. Leslie? Yeah, it's about baseball. Any idea why I'd like to have a reading about baseball, Jordan? Do you like baseball live? You got it. I like baseball a lot. Most of you probably know that. It's also what time of the year. Baseball is starting, isn't it? It's all over the news, okay? We got spring training for pitchers and catchers. They're planning current things that we're working with right now. So those are some reasons I picked this story. Can you think of any other reasons I might have picked this? If you take a look up in that left hand caption, once you're talking about what happens before a ball game, Alex, national anthem, you bet. All right, what about the national anthem? Do we do the national anthem here? Once in a while, don't we before games. Okay, what about when you go to the uni dome for football? We always play it before a basketball before a wrestling. So the national anthem is an important part of sporting contests, right? All right, so we're going to talk about those two things. How does a ball game in the national anthem come together? The passage that you're looking at has an introductory statement at the beginning. You see that up in the left hand corner there. It says, please rise and hear how the national anthem came to be played before ball games. Now, as I look at that little statement, here's what I start thinking about when I'm reading. I start creating what I call an I wonder question in my head. Now on I wonder question comes up when I look at a caption or a title or a heading. All right, and I wonder when I look at that, how did playing the national anthem actually become associated with the start of a ball game? You see that I wonder question coming up from looking at that? All right? So as I'm thinking of that, I wonder question. The next thing that I like to do is maybe predict some answers to that. All right, so let's predict some possible answers to that question together. Again, the question is, I wonder, how do the national anthem become associated with the start of a ball game? Let's make some predictions. Why do you think that might have happened? Why do we play a national anthem before a ball game? Yeah, Alex. Sure, it kind of gets people excited about honoring the country. That's certainly one thing, isn't it? It's a patriotic song, isn't it? All right? And that's one reason. I'm sure we maybe play that. Can you think of any other reasons? Why we might play the national anthem before a ball game, or maybe on this particular day when it got started? Take a look at the title. What does it say up at the top? What's the title of the article? Brie, what does it say? Strike song. And I think you're the one maybe ask that question for what strikes on me. Well, what's a strike? Can anybody tell me what a strike is? How many play baseball? Okay, what's a strike in baseball? Alex? The ball comes across in certain area, right? If you don't hit it, strike one, strike two, and strike three, you're out, correct? Okay, so that's one kind of a strike. Can you think of any other strikes that may happen? Leslie? Pardon me? In bowling, there's another example of a strike, okay? When all the pins get knocked down, that's a strike. Travis? Businesses go on strikes. What about baseball players? What about football players? Basketball players. Do they ever go on strike? Hockey players. Remember recently wasn't there a big hockey strike
