Making a video is MOST CERTAINLY a writing skill! If you know anything about writing you'll want to teach a student to plan their "essay" by using thought maps and then translate that to an outline. You might even want them to write a more thorough outline with actual phrases and sentences they'll be using. They'll organize these thoughts into a clear order with a clear beginning and clear end. Then you will want them to write a first draft. Then rewrite. Then have someone else read for problems and mistakes, take notes, and rewrite. If you are a teach concerned with how they write then you will want to grade them on it, give it back, and have them rewrite again. Then maybe they are done.



Making a quality video would call all that pre-production. Maybe they'll skip the actual typing of the script because they may not need it yet, but the organizing is still there. But oh, wait! They'll also need to think about how that outline will translate into concrete images and view it objectively from an audience perspective. This will require even more thought, processing, and even HIGHER order thinking skills than writing.



After they've come up with a storyboard (an outline in picture form - we are still in preproduction here) they'll need to translate drawings into live still or moving pictures and understand how one picture will juxtapose with the next ON TOP OF the words or music they'll written or at least planned.



They might enjoy all of that so watch out. You'll want them to review what they shot and then edit out a lot so it stays organized and adhears to their outline and script. !!!Be aware! This is also fun and something that they'll be engaged in and you won't be doing anything with technology yourself. After they edit they might have a peer review and go back to edit.



Then you'll have to grade them. Be sure to knock them down a letter grade if they are having fun - even if their thoughts are organized just like their essay they would have written.

I would like to have paid attention better but the outrageous talking-with-the-hands thing was highly distracting, as was the quick switching back and forth of multiple screens on one page at a time. Forgive us older folks for not being able to keep up with your younger speed-needs. Anyway, do they have any idea how much more work is involved in preparing lessons that use web, audio, and video regularly? We already don't get paid our worth for what we are currently doing. They should become teachers and turn it around themselves. Then they'd see where we are coming from and how hard it is teaching these always-bored kids.

Some of the greatest thinkers produced great works without video, audio, and movies. If you want to be a film maker, then make films. Education is using your mind to express a thought. Socrates, Plato, Descartes, Newton, Einstein all expressed themselves without "technology". Todays students seem to be saying BOO HOO! I want school to be a video game and I want it my way! I will listen to you if you have something important to say. If you have to have a dog and pony show to impress me, then you have thoughts that do not impact life. The Gettysburg Address was written on the back of an envelope. Socrates taught under a tree. Stop your whining and realize that very few jobs will require you to do a movie for your job. I think its a shallow arguement made by shallow thinkers.

One of the biggest problems with education is illiteracy... kids have poor reading and writing skills. Teachers who lower their standards and allow students to do a video instead of a written report are playing into that problem and not doing the students any favors. We are competing in a global economy and colleges teach students discipline, persistence, and how to think, on top of the skills. College is NOT all about lectures as this video would have you believe. Lectures are a necessary part of college, but there are in fact hands on labs, projects, etc that give students hands on skills. I think this video is misleading a simply a justification for students who can’t hack it, or simply don’t want to do what it takes for that degree.

This video really hit home. I totally agree that colleges and professors are stuck in the past. We are preparing 21st Century students in HS and then they leave and go to college to move back in time. Colleges must catch up!!! Thanks for this video! I plan to share it often!!!

As both a college student and a teacher, I could really appreciate this video.
As teacher’s, it is necessary that we listen to our students. They are telling us that they want to be in control of their learning, and sometimes we ignore that by sticking to our old ways…and as students, this can be so frustrating because we know we’ll get so much more out of the learning experience if we can enhance it with our own creativity.
Nobody wants to sit through or talk through a lecture. It is long and boring. Students need to be intrigued so that they will remember what they’re learning and be able to apply it to their lives and careers. It is so important as teacher’s that we leave room for our students to have options and means by which to express themselves, and in this day and age, that means is through technology!
