At my school, each of the 1,200 students are given laptops for the year for a fee of 70 dollars. The students are not taught to think because the HP tablet PC thinks for them. However, they are taught to use the technology to create and use computer software. This video really brought everything into perspective for me

I would love to engage my students with more technology.

However, if I teach students who can't afford those nice expensive ipods and laptop computers and I can't engage students because they would rather just talk to their friends then what's the point of the video. I believe in technology, obviously, but getting all students to use it correctly and with the intent of learning is another matter. Not withstanding who is going to pay for all this nice technology.

This video is disturbing on so many levels and the positive reaction surrounding it is frightening. At what point did students transition from "I am engaged in learning because I value education" to "Engage me and make me learn?" It is scary to think that current educational philosophy puts ALL of the onus on teachers to MAKE their students learn, rather than on students. Where is the personal responsibility? Engaging students through a variety of methods is obviously appropriate and beneficial but the responsibility for learning still must rest on the shoulders of the learners themselves—regardless of the delivery! Thinking, analyzing, and evaluating are all skills that must be learned through hard work--not simply using technology. Students already know how to use these technologies—perhaps we should be focusing on building good work ethics and the academic components of education first.

You're missing the point. One of the issues in schools today is that we continue to try to engage kids in learning by using 20th century technologies and instructional practices. This is one reason students are tuning out. They can access more information using technology, and in less time. For you, Technology is a tool, but for students today, it's their environment.

By the way, it was Dewey that proposed education take a more student centered approach, rather than the teacher centered approach that my parents, and even I grew up with. That's when there was a shift in the responsibility of learning. You can't just shove information at children and expect them to learn it because they need to be responsible for their own learning. Teachers ARE responsible for their students' learning! Students and community play a role as well, but to say that teachers should not be responsible, and that, ultimately, it's up to the student, makes your job sound very unimportant.

Students may know how to use technology but do they understand how to sift through all of the information they find? Do they understand how to use it ethically and legally? Do they know how to be safe on the Internet? Who will guide them if they are left to themselves? Why can't we build good work ethics by using technology? Technology is also hard work.

Brilliant video, powerful, emotive and hits the nail on the head, but the only reason I am watching this video is because I am a digital teacher for the 21 Century. Shame there are still a lot of teachers stuck in the 19th century!!!
