Can anyone tell me the name of the music composition played in this video? It is absolutely beautiful! I know many teachers who like to play music softly in the background to help students to focus!

All of my students have been supplied with laptops. I spend most of my time in class monitoring to see if they are on-task and not off playing games or exploring inappropriate sites on the internet. My time would be better spent assisting students and answering questions but because the whole world is available to them inside the classroom I am spending valuable face-time with my students just monitoring inappropriate use of these laptops.

My school district blocks content but students are very good at finding and sharing proxy sites. They are also not as tech savvy as administrators and school board members seem to think they are. They are no more interested in using the laptops to learn than they are in using books. The laptops simply give them a more exciting way to be off task.

I do like using technology as a tool in my classroom. Computers and the internet are useful resources but that is all they are, another tool/resource.

I go to a school in the Klein District in Texas where all the students are supplied with laptops and everything is pretty much exactly how you described it.

2.7 billion searches on google DOES NOT mean 2.7 questions. It means 2 billion searches for porn. "omg 10K hrs txt, lol." is not writing, nor reading. Developing PODcasts will take away time from classroom presentations. Do you have time for both? Watching a screen IS NOT being a digital learner. Playing computer games, watching TV, CDs, or youtube is not creating. My thoughts, not supported by any research except observation as a teacher and parent is that children like the computer because they have control of the content they engage with. Give them control in the classroom and they will be engaged.

You said "give them control in the classroom and they will be engaged."
You are right. When they are in control they are fully involved. (and I know you were referring to supervised control.)
Great comment!

Really? Who's going to enforce basic printing skills? Fine motor development? Using scissors? What should happen if the power goes out? The batteries die? We don't learn today because we've only taught them how to be "digital learners" and the equipment does not work? How about families who cannot afford computers, i pods, cell phones? The academic gap between financially secure students and those not so fortunate widens because they cannot afford/have access to this equipment? Please do not be so arrogant as to abandon other forms of learning. Technology is a TOOL to teach with as is a pencil. Let's not forget that. When we have a world of people who need to be stimulated every second of the day due to overuse of some of these creations and can't begin to think for themselves without a computer nearby, where will we go from there? Haven't any of you people seen the wall e movie?

I agree that children need to learn the essentials, such as using scissors and so on.... We need to find a good balance between the past and the future. I dont believe the whole learning experience should be digital, but I do believe we should all be able to use ALL of the resources available. Our minds need to stay open, remember that our students need to be taught in a way that helps them learn... they are after all the reason we teach!

Get districts to pay for decent technology in school. This video makes me angry because the school with its software blocker programs thwarts every effort i try to use technology in my classroom. Of course they tell us to do it, and then make it impossible to do.

Protecting students from seeing inappropriate communication is a controversial issue in the schools. We know that the students are surrounded by questionable pictures and fowl language. The students will have no qualms saying or drawing such disgusting things. Punishing them for what they say or draw will only create a negative attitude for what is proper and correct. A teacher should be mature enough not to show shock . Instead, she could make ask the students whether what they saw or heard was acceptable. Why? Some will share their own thoughts-" There's nothing wrong with saying..." Even my Dad says things like that. there will be others who will have reasons to disagree and insist that such things are not proper. Always go back to the fact that every communication picture or audio must be good for oneself, good for others...at all times. What positive result did you get by hearing the inappropriate? Let them answer it for themselves. This will show them that you trust them on using the good communication at all times. And leave them thinking....

I concur! I feel powered down at school so I know the students do. And I'm forced to say, put that phone away, I don't want to see ear buds.

That's awesome... Always keep in mind teaching it correctly and for a good purpose should be an accompaniment to teaching technology. I mean teach the children responsibility for what they do at the computer at all times.
