Five Star Celebrates 29 Years of Helping Great Authors Find Their Audience
Five Star Publications, Inc. looks ahead to more fascinating tales
CHANDLER, AZ (Sept. 12, 2014) – In the year that compact discs were the hot new technology and Madonna was starting her first road show, Five Star Publications, Inc. was breaking ground by beginning a journey to support and help promote some of the most compelling authors in America. Guided by a self-publisher who was far ahead of the curve, the story of Five Star Publications began in 1985 and remains today, 29 years later, as one of the leading voices in the industry.
Five Star’s story speaks volumes. Often, Five Star authors find themselves at the forefront of classrooms, events and media reports. For example, acclaimed children’s science and nature author of more than 50 books, Conrad J. Storad is approaching his visit with his millionth student and may do so with the upcoming Gator, Gator, Second Grader (Classroom Pet…or Not?). Arizona Agriculture: Bee's Amazing Adventure by Bonnie Apperson Jacobs and Terri Mainwaring, in cooperation with The University of Arizona College of Agriculture and Life Sciences Cooperative Extension and Maricopa County Farm Bureau, launched efforts to raise sponsorship funds to provide a copy of the book to every third-grader in the state of Arizona. And, Una Vida: A Fable of Music and the Mind by Nicolas Bazan, M.D., was recently made into a major motion picture starring Joaquim De Almeida, Bill Cobbs, Ruth Negga, Andre Royo, Sharon Lawrence and Aunjanue Ellis.
“When we deliver a great book right into the hands of an eager audience, that’s when the magic really takes hold for me,” says Linda F. Radke, founder and president of Five Star Publications. “Part of our focus now is creating ways to get more quality books into the little hands of those who need them.”
Radke leads the way with a creative team of skilled professionals—from editing and graphic design to website creation and publicity—who produce and market award-winning fiction and nonfiction books for adults and children worldwide. She was named "Book Marketer of the Year" by Book Publicists of Southern California and has received numerous public relations and marketing awards. A former teacher-turned-author and author-turned-publisher, Radke has been hailed as an industry innovator and her team agrees.
“Linda’s experience, energy and positive ‘can-do’ attitude have guided many authors (including me) toward success. I know from personal experience that each book receives her individual, caring attention, from inception to publication, to the drive to build awareness through strategic marketing,” says Paul Howey, author and freelance Five Star editor for more than 20 years. “Linda leads our team in finding the right audience for each book and in capturing the attention of that audience, without fail.”
As the company celebrates its 29th anniversary, Five Star boasts a lengthy list of books in its catalog; multiple divisions within the company including Five Star Literacy Foundation, School Express Press, and the Dragonfly Book Awards; and numerous local, national and international accolades including ONEBOOK AZ for Kids 2012 with Arizona Way Out West & Witty by Lynda Exley and Conrad J. Storad. Yet, the company continues to write new chapters to add to its story. The latest is StoryMonsters Ink, a free, subscription-based monthly e-digest that gives parents and educators the latest news about award-winning and debut books, author profiles, state-by-state literacy events, science-based classroom guides and book reviews written by the target audience of children’s authors—the children themselves. StoryMonsters Ink is complemented by Story Monster Approved!, a program designed to help parents and educators choose top-quality books, and Story Monsters and Friends: Creatures to Color from Five Star Land by Conrad J. Storad, a coloring book which features the illustrations from several Little Five Star books.
"As a Five Star author, I'm thrilled that this publishing house has created yet another exciting, wonderful avenue to put great children's literature into eager hands,” says Jana Bommersbach, author of the award-winning A Squirrel’s Story—A True Tale. “I'm especially happy to see that StoryMonsters Ink will let children review books. I'm betting this is going to be another winner for Linda Radke.”
Five Star’s distribution, partnerships and memberships with groups include the Children’s Book Council, Independent Book Publisher’s Association, National Federation of Press Women, Midpoint Book Sales and Distribution, Costco, Sam's Club, The University of Arizona College of Agriculture and Life Sciences Cooperative Extension, Maricopa County Farm Bureau, The Desert Botanical Gardens and The Phoenix Herd Museum.
As Five Star Publications approaches the close of its third decade, its table of contents presents a flourishing and comprehensive range of services for authors who want to self-publish, educators, librarians, parents and event organizers.
To commemorate its 29th anniversary, Five Star has unveiled an updated company logo. “We
strive to stay current with the times while never sacrificing the quality of the service we provide,” says Radke. “I’m very grateful to celebrate 29 years in this business. I can only hope the next 29 years will be just as exciting and fulfilling! I can’t imagine it any other way.”

History:
Founded by company president Linda F. Radke, Five Star Publications has its own interesting history. "My mother grew up in a family of nine brothers and sisters," Radke explains. "Five of the family, including my mother served in World War II. During the war, parents who had sons or daughters in the service displayed stars in their window—one for each child. It was a patriotic gesture and also expressed the deep hope that each would return home safely. One of my mother's brothers was captured and held as a prisoner of war. Fortunately, all five eventually returned home," she adds. "My Uncle, Art, used the name 'Five Star' when he opened his first grocery store in Indiana. Five stars became the symbol of my mom's (Anna Weiss Foster) family and is carried on in my company."
