And I?m going to teach you about authors
Authors are artists that paint pictures with words
The pictures or images can be fiction or fake
Or nonfiction, not fake
If something is not fake, then it must be real
Authors write fiction to entertain their readers
And nonfiction to inform or teach their readers
What kind of author are you?
Can you paint a picture with only words?
First, we will manufacture our own book using a piece of paper, a pair of scissors and origami
Remember, the words ?Authors? and ?Origami?are two of our Quack-a-demic vocabulary words
If you hear Origami or Author, say ?Quack! Quack!? and be ready to tell all about it.
Origami is the ancient japanese art of paper folding
People all around the world use their imagination to fold a 2 dimensional paper into a 3 dimensional creation!
Are you ready to give it a try?
Start with your paper standing up vertically like a person.
Fold the head or top of the paper down to the feet or the bottom of the paper.
Line it up carefully.
Hold it tightly and press or pinch the paper in place.
Next, zip a cris on your fingernail to make nice edges on your book.
Next, fold the belt of middle of the paper down to the feet or bottom of the paper and press it into place.
Now, make the arms or signs of the paper, clap together in the middle.
Line it up, hold it, press it and zip it into place once again.
Can you predict how many rectangles you have made?
Open the paper up back to the beginning.
There are 8 rectangles.
Now fold the head back down to the feet once again.
Look for the side of the paper that is closed.
When you find the edge that is closed, carefully cut on the line just past the center.
Now open up your paper, rotate it 90 degrees and fold it in half.
Don?t forget to line it up carefully and zip the edges.
Now you are ready to make something magical.
Stand up your paper until you see a diamond in the center.
Holding the paper by its side, slowly push one vertex of the diamond into the other vertex of the diamond.
The diamond will start to narrow in the center.
Continue pushing until the pages begin to fall flat.
Keep pushing and flattening the pages as you go along.
You are almost there!
And abra kadabra!
You just made a book without tape or glue.
Have you decided what kind of words you will use to fill up the pages?
If you want to entertain someone, write fiction.
If you want to inform or teach, write nonfiction.
Whichever book you choose to write, don?t forget 3 important things.
Your secret code.
And the color of your table.
This instructional video teaches that authors are artists that "paint pictures" in the reader's mind with only words, briefly explains fiction and non-fiction, and models the steps to create an origami book using paper and scissors.
