Boys and girls, today I?m gonna read a notebook. It?s called, Things I Like. And I?m gonna use some of the strategies that we?ve been talking about to help me read it. Like checking the picture, and getting my mouth ready to say that first sound. I want you guys to watch me as I read.
Oh let me check this picture. Oh I see. I see what it looks like. Flowers? Maybe they?re roses. Well, uhm, I?m gonna have to get my mouth ready to see if it says flowers or roses. I see some snap words. I like? hmm? getting my mouth ready. I like fff? oh flowers! I like flowers! I see the fff sound. Can?t be rrr... roses cause I don?t see rrr. I see fff, so by using my check the picture strategy and getting my mouth ready strategy, I?m pretty confident that that this says I like flowers.
Watch me again. Ohh let me check the picture. Hmm, it?s the sky. Maybe it says I like skies? Hmm, better use my mouth strategy too and get my mouth ready. I like, hmm? it can?t be sky because there is no sss? Oh, I like clouds. I like clouds!
Oh let me get my.. What do i see here? Rainbow, sun, and clouds. Maybe it says I like the sun or maybe it says I like the clouds or maybe it says I like the sky or maybe I like rainbows. I?m going to have to use my getting my mouth ready strategy for this one. I like rrrr.. Hmmm. Must be rainbows!
So I?ll continue with this for all the pages and it could be things like I like to jump versus I like to hop. Where sometimes, the picture is always helpful but sometimes its says jump and sometimes it says hop sometimes it says bird, sometimes it says duck. So the strategy of checking the picture gets them into the habit of searching for that meaning and then the strategy of checking the first letter, you know, you?re using phonics to help you figure it out.
