You can use the following alternative words for you chronological paper.
For before, you can use: earlier, once, yesterday, previously and prior.
For first, you can use: starting with, at first, to begin and at the beginning.
For second, you can use: following, soon after, second, third? and as soon as.
Last can be replaced with; finally, last of all, to conclude, in the end and ultimately.
