Math - Measurement
Measurement is a basic principle in math taught from elementary school. When students are asked to bring in rulers, this is their first introduction to units of measure. They usually start off with measuring length, width, and height. Then, they move on to angles using a protractor. Clocks are also taught, along with with it the principles of measuring time.
Later on, in their science subjects, they learn other units of measure, like temperature, speed, kinetic energy, and a lot more. The idea of measurements extends well into their college days, and even higher education. Only thing is as students move up the ladder of education, they encounter ever more complex units of measure.
Measurements are important both in daily life and in specialized careers. Going to the grocery store involves a lot of measurements, like how many pounds of meat to buy, how many quarts of milk, how big a box of cereal, and so on. When in the gas station, how many gallons of gasoline to fill up is usually what’s on the minds of drivers. At home, measurement is also quite useful, especially in the kitchen. That’s why many people have sets of measuring cups, measuring spoons, beakers, and the like. Cooking a hearty meal requires precision too.
And in the various careers people take, measurements are crucial. In construction, it’s all about the lengths of steel beams, the volumes of pipes, and the weights of bricks, among others. In advertising, there are such things as cost per click, customer acquisition cost, average attention span, and many more. In the computer industry, they measure stuff like latency, CPU frequency, response time, and a lot of other details about the performance of computerized devices.
Measurement can be applied to all aspects of life. It is an essential skill that has to be taught and enhanced at every level of education.
