Math Lesson on Fractions
This wasn't get busy baking. We will be doing improper fractions, doubling fractions, having fractions, and subtracting fractions. First you need to learn how to do a mixed number to an improper fraction. To change a mixed number to an improper fraction, you can draw a model or you can multiply. Draw a model for two and a half. You want to start with a large rectangle. Then you want to divide it into three parts. Two for the holes, and the third one, for the fraction. Each piece needs to be divided into two parts because the denominator is two. Then you'll shade two part equal one whole, two more parts to equal two wholes. And then one more part to show two and a half parts. Then you count the total number of pieces, and put it above the original denominator. So there are 5 pieces shaded out of half. So the answer is 5 halves.
This time, let's try multiplying to convert two and a half to an improper fraction. Multiply the whole number by the number of pieces, which is the denominator. So two wholes times two parts equals four parts. Add the product to the numerator for the total number of parts. So four parts plus one part from the original fraction equals 5 parts. Last step is to place a total number of parts above the original denominator. So again, we have 5 hats. Doubled fractions. To double a fraction, you simply add the two fractions together. Double two and a half. First, add your whole numbers together. Two plus two equals four holes. Since you have common denominators, add your numerators together. One plus one equals two parts, place this over the denominator, the original denominator, so now you have two halves. Two and a half deviled is equal to four and two halves. Which can be reduced to 5. Think it through number one. Remember how much more and how many more means to subtract. In the original recipe, how much more sugar is required than flour. So using the table on your paper, you get one and a fourth -5 8.
To solve, you will change your mixed number to an improper fraction. One and one fourth is equal to 5 fourths, because one whole times four parts equals four, plus one part from the original fraction equals 5 parts out of four. Find an equivalent fraction with a common denominator. So 5 fourths times two halves equals ten eighths. Then you subtract your numerators. Ten eighths -5 8 equals 5 8. Think through number two. In the doubled recipe, how much more better is there than flour? So the doubled numbers are three and a half minus one and a fourth. Since you have two mixed numbers, the first step this time will be to track your whole numbers. Three minus one equals two wholes. Find an equivalent fraction with a common denominator for half minus fourth. So one half times two halves equals two fourths. Then subtract your numerators. Two fourths minus one fourth equals one fourth. Final step, put your whole number and fraction back together. So your answer is two and a fourth. Now it's your turn.
