Plants are beautiful. They cover the lawns and make the front of the house look very pretty. They usually come in green, but there are other colors too. Flowers can be red, pink, violet, and many other vibrant colors. Some leaves can even turn yellow or orange every fall.

Behind the beauty of plant life is a lot of science. The field of botany allows high school students to discover how plants work, what makes them tick, and in turn, how to better take care of them. Botany allows students to study everything about plants, from the outside to the inside, from the largest parts to the individual cells that compose them.

Like animals, plants can also be classified into different groups. There are flowering plants, non-flowering plants, terrestrial plants, aquatic plants, aerial plants, and so on. Kingdom Plantae is as diverse as Kingdom Animalia, which means there is much to discover and unpack.

One unique ability that sets plants apart is their ability to make their own food. This is called photosynthesis, where plants use the energy of the sun’s rays to create sugar. Sugar is the main energy source of many living things, including plants. This is why many fruits are sweet; fruits are where plants store their extra sugar.

Speaking of fruits, there are also many various kinds of fruit. Botanists classify fruits based on their shape, size, composition of the skin, size of the seeds, and how the seeds are arranged inside, among other things. The kind of fruit can help identify a certain plant and how it’s distinct from another plant that looks like it.

There are more things to learn about plants, and botany teaches all of them. The subject also makes for exciting field trips for students to uncover the more exotic plants that don’t live just anywhere.
