COOL PLACE VALUE
<div></div>
Learn how to expand numbers from a standard form so that saying it or writing it in words becomes easy. We have Thousands, Hundred, Tens and Ones and it is from this knowledge that we expand the numbers and write words. Let us look at some examples:
<div></div>
Standard form: 2532
<div></div>
That number can be expanded using that simple analogy of Thousands, Hundreds, Tens and Ones.
<div></div>
Therefore, the expanded form of the above number will be;
2000+500+30+2
<div></div>
The last number on your right is what we call, ones
<div></div>
The second number on the right is, tens
<div></div>
The third number on the right is, Hundreds
<div></div>
The fourth number on the right is, Thousands.
<div></div>
Therefore using the expanded form we get the amount in words;
2000 + 500 + 30 + 2
<div></div>
Two thousand five hundred thirty two
<div></div>
Joining the words together we get the amount in words;
Two thousand five hundred and thrity-two.
<div></div>
Example 2:
<div></div>
Standard form: 6081
<div></div>
Expanded form: 6000+000+80+1
<div></div>
In the above example however, we notice 000 for our hundreds. 000 count for nothing and should therefore be eliminated as write in words, like this;
<div></div>
6000 + 80 + 1
<div></div>
Six thousand eighty-one
<div></div>
The amount in words is therefore; Six thousand and eighty-one.
<div></div>
Example 3;
<div></div>
Standard form: 3869
<div></div>
Expanded form: 3000+800+60+9
<div></div>
3000 + 800 + 60 + 9
Three thousand eight hundred sixty nine
<div></div>
Word form: Three thousand eight hundred sixty-nine.
<div></div>
I hope you now have the hang of it!
<div></div>
Example 4:
<div></div>
Standard form: 5207
<div></div>
Expanded form: 5000 + 200 + 00 + 7
<div></div>
Remember that the zeros count for nothing and will therefore not be part of our words.
Word form: Five thousand two hundred and seven.
<div></div>
Example 5:
Standard form: 9973
<div></div>
Expanded form: 9000 + 900 + 70 + 3
<div></div>
Word form: Nine thousand nine hundred seventy-three.
<div></div>
Example 6:
<div></div>
Standard form: 3506
<div></div>
Expanded form: 3000 + 500 + 00 + 6
<div></div>
Word form: Three thousand five hundred and six.
<div></div>
I hope you now know how to expand numbers and write them in words!
