Calendar Math
Elementary / Math / Ratios and Proportions
Calendar Math is a section of the math lesson where I get to focus in on key mathematical principles. My cooperating teacher designed her calendar math setup to flow from a math lesson or flow into a math lesson. This includes reinforcing the day of the week and the date, reminding students about ten more and ten less, one more and one less, which builds on the concepts of two digit numbers, as well as highlighting the skill set used for expanded form. Calendar math also encompasses introducing the concept of the time on a clock in minutes, how many vowels are in a chosen name—reinforcing one to one correspondence and simple operations in numbers. At the point of time when we made this classroom video, we were able to focus on both questioning students as well as modeling the correct way to answer the questions. When this video was recorded, we were just starting to introduce story problems, so the time limit did not allow for a more in depth coverage of that particular aspect.
