This lesson was taught to increase fluency, specifically focusing on breathing at periods and commas, waiting at ellipses, and using the right voice inflection at question marks and exclamation marks. This mini lesson was the introductory piece to a later lesson that repeated the reading out loud activity, used fluency task cards to practice in partners with the motions, and then in round 2 without the motions, and then used a short activity sheet to check for understanding. 19/20 students made 100% on their activity sheet that looked like this: When reading out loud: We take a short breath at a: __________________ We take a longer breath at a: _______________ We show excitement at a: __________________ Our voice goes up at a: __________________ We wait at a: ________________________ The activity sheet included a word bank with the words: period, comma, ellipses, question mark, and exclamation so the students could use the correct spelling.
