Many students think of school mainly as a series of mental exercises. The lessons and activities are all geared towards making them smarter. School for them is mostly brain work, and true enough, it is. So in order to make their education more holistic, health and physical education classes (PE) are needed. The goal of this subject is to help students maintain a physically active lifestyle in school and beyond.
PE classes usually involve sports, like basketball, volleyball, football, and the like. The famous (or infamous, depending on whom you ask) dodgeball is a PE class favorite as well. Then there are other, more niche games like badminton, tennis, and track and field. Whatever is played, though, the goal is the same: it's basically to get kids to move, run, and jump.
If taught properly, PE classes can be very enjoyable and promote good sportsmanship. For team sports like football, it can even be great team-building sessions. Sports not only teach kids the rules of the game and how to win; they can also teach good values.
Now, onto the health part. Health is usually integrated into PE classes because PE does promote physical well-being. The physical activity does its share better when paired with other ways to nurture one's physical health. This includes, among other things, diet and nutrition. As kids are encouraged to live an active lifestyle, they ought to be taught to eat healthy too. After all, a balanced diet is as important as exercise. Eating healthy food is the best way to prevent catching diseases as well, meaning fewer trips to the doctor. Students can thus be more productive in class this way.
But of course, sometimes falling ill cannot be avoided. With that, health class also equips students how to take good care of themselves when sick so they can get back up on their feet as soon as possible.
