This engaging science lesson about food chains is taught in 5th grade. The students are learning about what a food chain is and how to create one. The beginning of the lesson (not shown in video) began with learning about the students prior knowledge. The teacher gave students 3 sticky notes each and used a KWL chart to learn what they knew, wanted to know, and learned. To begin, the students wrote what they knew and wanted to know on their sticky notes and put them on the board's KWL chart. The teacher read various sticky notes to the class from both categories. Then, the students recalled important key terms such as producer, consumer, herbivore, carnivore, and omnivore. Next, the students learned what a food chain is and how it is created. The video shows the teacher demonstrating her backyard food chains and engages the students throughout the entire lesson. The group activity game allows the students to create food chains with support from the other students in their group. Finally, the students are asked to individually create their own food chain from their favorite ecosystem or environment. As an exit slip the students were asked to write one thing they learned on their last sticky note.
