Linear Measurement Drill
Elementary / Math / Measurement
This video is used to help students become more familiar with standard linear measurement to 1/4 in. I've found that the biggest obstacle students face in this area is a simple lack of visual familiarity with all the "little lines" in between each inch. An adult glances at it and knows without effort that they're seeing 3/4 in., for example, because it's something we've seen so many times; it becomes like a familiar word while reading. There are two levels. In level one, students see an illustration of a ruler and a pencil. The measurement is spoken by the video, and the students should repeat it out loud while looking at it. Next, the written form of the measurement is shown (so that students will learn how to correctly write it), and again, the students should repeat it out loud while looking at it. In Level 2, actual photos are used of a ruler measuring the depth of a cup, and the same process is used; but this time, to make it more fun, the measurements are spoken in different amusing accents. Students should repeat the measurement out loud and can do so in the same voice if they want to.
