A Fair(y) Use Tale
College and University / Career and Technical Education (CATE) / Law
Professor Eric Faden of Bucknell University created this humorous, yet informative, review of copyright principles delivered through the words of the very folks we can thank for nearly endless copyright terms. It is a fine example of the successful use of the fair use doctrine- it uses copyrighted audio-visual clips from a copyright owner which is also the entity being reviewed for the purpose of education on the topic near to that copyright owner's heart (copyright infringement) by using very short clips in a non-commercial way. It is ticking all the boxes of being a legally defensible Fair Use work- it is designed to teach (and does so nicely- copyright, public domain and fair use are covered), uses the subject and its author for parody, criticises and, most importantly, it has no impact on the commercial value of the original works.
