Video is now available to view at: https://vimeo.com/ondemand/paperwordsanimation To meet the needs of an increasingly diverse student population, tools that help teachers make better assessments and offer creative solutions in the classroom are essential. PAPER WORDS, a half-hour PBS funded animated film that Video Librarian “highly recommends” for K-12 educators, teaching colleges and universities, is a strong addition to the classroom in Education departments. Based on a compilation of common immigrant stories and themes, PAPER WORDS is the story about a newly arrived immigrant girl who displays unusual social behavior in the classroom. The girl's inability to adapt in her new environment places her teacher into a difficult position, one that challenges the teacher's skills set, knowledge base, and assumptions. This short film inspires creative “out of the box” solutions in diverse classroom situations, examines cross-cultural issues, cultural education norms, and developmental issues. The themes presented in this short film are not only historically relevant, but can also serve as a springboard to other education issues. Beyond the film's academic appeal, PAPER WORDS is artistically crafted, entertaining, and explores universal themes that all viewers can relate to.
