Active Schools in rural Guatemala
High School / Fine Arts / Film
Plan introduced this education methodology back in 1999 in state schools in rural Guatemala. The concept of active schools is to train teachers to teach mixed school levels in an participatory way. In the majority of schools in rural Guatemala, there are several school levels in one same class. Plan provides the teacher training and school materials. There are now 350 Active Schools in rural Guatemala, teaching 3,500 children. Children are taught in both indigenous Q'chi and Spanish. The school we filmed was in the district of Alta Verapaz. The story is told by a couple of students and the school head teacher.
